One victim of Canada's last federal budget was the Support to Specialized Research Collections Programme run by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Over the past decade, this programme has enabled the CRRS to augment its collection of early printed books and to purchase several significant microform collections. We are pleased to announce, however, that in the programme's final competition this spring the CRRS was awarded the funds to purchase the microfilm collection of the complete state papers for the reign of Henry VIII. Added to our holdings in English social history and literature, the CRRS now offers scholars major resources in the political and religious history of early 16th-century England.
In May 1995 Professor Margaret King (Brooklyn College, CUNY) donated to the Centre her collection of microfilms acquired in conducting research for her books Venetian Humanism (1986) and The Death of the Child Valerio Marcello (1994). The core of the donation comprises 103 microfilms of manuscripts, primarily Italian humanist texts. The majority of the originals are in the collection of the Biblioteca Marciana in Venice; the remainder are in repositories in Italy, France, Germany, Austria, Spain, Belgium, England, and Scotland. Also included are microfilms of 28 complete printed works, from rare incunables and early imprints to modern books.
